Review of the PC Tools Registry Mechanic:
Here is a review or walkthrough of the PC Tools Registry Mechanic. I had a user bring me a computer that was running extremely slow. The computer's boot time, Internet access and application startup was almost painful. It took a total of 1-minute and 40-seconds to boot up to a usable desktop. The computer is an Athlon 2000+ with a half a Gigabyte of RAM. Not the fastest computer by today's standards but it was the only computer he had so I wanted to help him out. I figured that some of the PC Tools utilities would be my best bet for breathing new life into this computer.
Before I started using any of the PC Tools optimization utilities I took a screenshot of the Windows Task Manager. The Task Manager shows the computer has about 294 Megabytes of available physical memory and running 33 processes at any given moment. I wanted to see if PC Tools could help me speed this computer up a bit.
At first, I was thinking that the registry was mostly the culprit in slowing this computer down. After some further investigation, I found a few programs that are known to install spyware on computers. I decided to remove the spyware before running Registry Mechanic. I used the PC Tools Spyware Doctor for this task. Spyware Doctor is a recommended spyware removal program, the only one I ever use. After running the spyware removal program, the Task Manager showed quite an improvement already. That utility freed up about 34 Megabytes of available physical memory and decreased the running processes.
The computer was much happier already but still running slower than it should. I'm thinking the PC Tools Registry Mechanic will bring this computer back to its original healthy state. I proceeded to install the PC Tools Registry Mechanic.
The installation of Registry Mechanic was uneventful. When the installation was finished, the following screen giving the option to start the Registry Mechanic and scan for problems. Looked like a good choice so I clicked the finish button.
The PC Tools Registry Mechanic automatically started the registry scan. The following screenshot is what the utility looks like in action.
When the Registry Mechanic finished scanning the computer, it had found 470 errors in the registry. Naturally, I smacked the Repair button to repair the registry.
When the PC Tools Registry Mechanic was finished repairing the registry, the utility summarized that it had found 470 problems with the registry and it had fixed 470 problems. This is good. I clicked the continue button.
I chose to turn the registry monitor on to protect this computer from future registry problems.
Then I chose to compact the registry. Registry compacting optimizes the registry by removing gaps and wasted space thus improving system performance. This screen asked me if I wanted to compact my registry. I clicked Yes.
The next screen told me that the Registry Mechanic had analyzed the registry and that there was about 2 megabytes of wasted space. I clicked the Compact Now button and it proceeded to save 6% of wasted registry space.
Then the Registry Mechanic informed me that it had to reboot the computer to finalize compacting the registry. I smacked the Restart button.
After the reboot, I chose to optimize the system and then rebooted again for the fun of it.
The Boot time is now 1 minute and 5 seconds! That is an acceptable boot-time considering the age of this PC. The computer now has a total of 336 Megabytes of available memory. That is a total of 42 Megabytes of freed up physical memory just by running the PC Tools computer optimization utilities. Impressive. This tutorial started out to be a review of the PC Tools Registry Mechanic but I had to use the Spyware Doctor utility to remove the spyware first. Just by running the Registry Mechanic, the computer performance increased greatly. The gain was about 8 Megabytes of available physical memory and a decrease in the page-file usage of about 50 Megabytes. This computer is running good again and ready to be returned to the owner. I hope he can stay out of trouble.
All of the PC Tools utilities that I have tested always performed better than my expectations. The PC Tools Registry Mechanic was no exception.
